PHASES OF THE SUN
Last year I went to the studio of the seventy-year old painter Giorgio Morandi in Bologna. His famous “Models,” thirty or forty bottles, gathered dust on the floor. A tiny canvas of a bottle stood on an easel. It looked to me com-pleted, but he said it would require a great deal more work. He was a rather tall, lean man with white hair and elegant manners. We talked of painting, and he told a story which made a deep impression on me. “A friend of mine,” he said, “told me: ‘It’s impossible to paint sunsets any more. They always come out looking like picture postcards.’ And I said to my friend: ‘The trouble is, between you and the sun there is a picture postcard.’”
Ever since then I have found myself painting pictures of the sun.
